DNS (Domain Name System) is a system that maps human-readable domain names to numerical IP addresses.

Record Types

  • Address (A) Record
    • Points name to IPv4 address
  • Quad Address (AAAA) Record
    • Points name to IPv6 address
  • CNAME Record (Canonical Name)
  • Name Server (NS) Record
  • Mail Exchanger (MX) Record
    • Points to mail server (e.g. mx1.mail.example.com)
  • Text (TXT) Record
    • Contains textual information about the domain
  • PTR Record (Pointer To a Canonical Name)
    • Used to validate IP is legit
  • SRV Record (Generalized Service Location)
